A timeless window furnishing, roller blinds were once popular for their ability to complement sharp and minimal homes. After making a comeback in more recent years, many homeowners have started to question how they can go about installing the blinds on their own rather than having to rely on having professionals do it for them.
Measuring
- On a spare piece of paper, draw a rectangle to represent the window in question. If you’re buying multiple blinds, you will need to draw multiple rectangles – be sure to clearly label them to avoid confusion down the track when it comes time to order.
- Using a tape measure, start inside the recess of the window frame and measure horizontally across from one side to the other. If you don’t have a recess, do this flush with the window within the wall. Do this at both the top and bottom of the frame, as they are sometimes not square.
- On your drawing, note down the respective top and bottom widths. Next, measure the vertical drop of the window from the top to the base of the windowsill. Measure both sides of the window and make note of these measurements on the drawing, too.
- Double-check these measurements before placing any orders. Making sure they’re correct will help to avoid unseen issues during the installation process. If you notice any discrepancies, make sure you start the measurement process for that window again.
Installing
- Measure out points for where your brackets will sit on either side of the frame. Ensure that they’re the same height and depth. Hold each bracket in place and pre-drill the screw holes. Then, using an impact driver, screw the brackets in – ensure they are level and sturdy.
- Mount the retracted roller blind into the brackets. Once it’s in place, attach whatever cord or operating mechanism you have opted for. Ensure that everything is secure and that the operating cord is, ideally, held on a control bracket so that it doesn’t become a safety hazard.
Depending on where you have ordered your roller blinds from, you may also find that they supply you with installation instructions. If this is the case, make sure you follow them to a T – you don’t want to risk damaging your brand new blind, especially as improper installation may void your warranty.
